The European spacecraft Giotto took this picture of the nucleus of Halley’s comet in 1986. The nucleus is shaped like a peanut, with one end in the upper left section of the image and the other in the bottom right. The top left represents the true, dark color of the nucleus. The part of the nucleus at the bottom right is facing the Sun, and gases are erupting off of the surface of that part of the nucleus.
