A major figure in American politics for 40 years. Calhoun served as a member of the United States House of Representatives and Senate. He also served as secretary of war and secretary of state and as vice-president under John Quincy Adams.

On December 28, 1832, John C. Calhoun becomes the first U.S. vice president to resign from office, citing political differences with President Andrew Jackson and a desire to fill a vacant Senate seat in South Carolina.
