These life-sized terra-cotta figures of the Imperial Guard were produced for the tomb of the first emperor of China, Qin Shihuangdi (Ch’in Shih-huang-ti). The tomb site, which lies near the Chinese city of Xi’an, was excavated in 1977. Xi’an is one of China’s oldest cities.
