/photos/images/Smithsonian National Museum.jpg The Rotunda Elephant
The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History has been home to this giant male African elephant since the late 1950s. When alive, the elephant weighed over 11 metric tons (12 U.S. tons), several tons more than the average African elephant. Situated in the central rotunda, the elephant greets millions of visitors to the museum every year.
